In an increasingly connected world, the smartphone has become an almost natural extension of our hand. But what begins as a convenience can quickly become an unconscious habit and, sometimes, frustrating. If you find yourself browsing the phone at an inappropriate time, feeling that the instinct to take it and scroll its contents is rooted too thoroughly, it is a clear signal. But the good news is that recognizing this scheme is the first, fundamental step towards change.
Many of us seek ways to reduce this “digital state” before it degenerates into a real addiction. Fortunately, smartphone manufacturers have understood this need, integrating powerful tools into their operating systems to monitor and manage the time spent in front of the screen. In this article, we will explore how to make the most of these native features, along with a number of practical tips, to help you restore a healthier and more aware relationship with your device.
The Concept of Digital Wellness: Monitoring and Agire
The modern approach to the management of the use of the smartphone is based on the concept of “Digital Wellness” (or equivalent as “Time of Use”). These features are designed to provide you with a clear overview of your digital habits and, at the same time, give you the tools to intervene. It is not about demonising technology, but learning to use it more consciously and intentionally. Let's see how the main operating systems implement these solutions.
Manage the Use on Android: Google Digital Wellness
For Android smartphone users with Google services, the key feature is Digital Wellness, introduced with Android 9.0 and later. This tool is a real control center for your digital habits.
How to Access and Monitor
To access it, just open the app Settings (the gear icon) and look for the voice Digital Wellness and Parental Control. The home screen will welcome you with an intuitive chart that sums up the total time of use of your smartphone, the number of unlocks and notifications received. Touching up View details of activities, you will be able to deepen, displaying a weekly chart and the detailed list of the most used apps.
Set Limits for Apps
One of the most useful features is the ability to set timer for apps. On the main screen of Digital Wellness, you will find an hourglass symbol next to each app. Touching it, you can define a daily time limit for that application. Once the timer has expired, the app will be disabled and will not be usable until the next midnight. If you want to lock it completely, set the timer on 0 hours and 0 minutes. Limits can be removed at any time by touching the basket icon.
Rest mode (Wind Down)
The Rest Mode is designed to limit distractions when it is time to relax or go to bed. You can activate it according to a specific time schedule for days of the week, or during the rest period. By default, this mode deactivates alerts and notifications and turns the screen into grayscale, a great deterrent for night use. You can customize these options to your liking.
No distractions (Focus Mode)
The function No distractions allows you to pause potentially more distractive apps, hiding notifications. After selecting the apps to pause, you can manually activate it via the button Activate now or set a schedule for automatic activation at specific times and days of the week.
Management of Notifications
Finally, Digital Wellness allows you to have a capillary control over notifications. From the main screen, you can access Manage notifications to permanently disable them for certain apps, or configure mode behavior Don't bother to specify exceptions, programming and audio types.
Digital Wellness on Samsung Smartphone
Samsung smartphones also offer a feature with the same name, Digital wellbeing and parental control, but with a slightly different implementation than Google. To access it, go up Settings (coupling icon) and look for the corresponding item.
Overview and Objectives
The main screen features a daily usage chart, divided by categories such as Social, Video and Productivity. Touching the chart, you will access a more detailed Dashboard showing the number of notifications received and unblocking the device. Samsung also offers the possibility to set a screen usage time target, helping you keep control.
Timer Applications
The section Timer applications allows you to limit the use of specific apps. You can select one or more apps from a list divided by categories and set a maximum timer usage. You can customize these limits for specific days of the week and define its duration in minutes or hours.
Additional Monitoring Functions
A distinctive aspect of Samsung is additional monitoring: you will find information about the time of use while driving (Guide Monitoring), while walking (Walk monitoring) or to control the listening volume (Volume monitoring), offering a more holistic view of your relationship with your device.
Digital Management for Huawei (without Google services)
For Huawei smartphones without Google services, the integrated alternative is called Digital management. Access is via Settings (big icon) and the dedicated voice.
Screen and Limit duration
The Digital Management home screen shows the total time of use. The function Screen duration allows you to set a daily limit: exceeded this time, the smartphone will no longer be usable until midnight. You can customize the limits for working days and rest, or create additional ones.
Limits for Apps
With Limit of apps, you can set up a maximum usage time for specific installed applications. You can choose to allow an app always, never, or for a defined duration, offering flexibility in management.
Unused time
The function Tempo di inutilizzo allows you to program periods during which your smartphone becomes inaccessible, except for the calls and apps you have expressly configured as always permitted. You can define the start and end time and frequency (journalist, weekly or for specific days).
Use time on iPhone (iOS)
Apple has also developed its own tool for conscious use: Use time, accessible from the app Settings of iOS. At first access, the system will guide you in the task monitoring ability.
Detailed monitoring
After activation, Use time begins to collect data on the use of the device. The main screen shows the daily average of the time spent with the unlocked iPhone. Touching View all activities, you will get detailed statistics: most used apps, number of screen activations and received notifications.
Usage Pause (Downtime)
The Pause of use is a powerful tool to inhibit phone usage for specific periods. Once activated, you can define the start and end time and the days of the week when applying the restriction. During this break, only incoming/output calls will be available and the apps you have previously set as Always allowed. This setting can be shared between all devices associated with the same Apple ID via iCloud.
Limitation of Apps
To limit the use of specific apps, the function Limitazioni app is ideal. You can add restrictions for entire categories of apps (e.g., “Social”) or for individual applications. After selecting the desired apps, set a daily timer. If necessary, you can customize the days of the week in which to apply the restriction. Once the timer has expired, the app will be deactivated until midnight.
Security with PIN code
To avoid disabling restrictions too easily, you can set a PIN code for Use time. This option is available on the home screen, under the heading Use code “Term of use”. If you want to remove all restrictions and stop data collection, you can do so by voice Disable usage time, located at the bottom of the main menu.
Practical Tips for Conscious Use of Smartphone
The functionalities integrated in the operating systems are excellent tools, but they are not enough alone. The key is always in your awareness and in your will to change habits. Here are some behavioral tips that can make the difference:
- Identification and Remove Distrations: Recognize which apps absorb more. If they are not essential, consider uninstalling them. If you can't help it, disable at least notifications to reduce the temptation to take your phone to any vibration or sound.
- Keep your phone away: Physical distance is a powerful deterrent. Avoid keeping your phone at your fingertips while resting, studying, work or doing activities that do not require it. In particular, night charging should take place away from bed to discourage improper use that delays sleep and creates dependence.
- Define a Conscious Limit Time: The smartphone is a tool, not an enemy. Rather than demonize it, cut out a specific time interval every day to check notifications, respond to messages and give you a few minutes of leisure. Set a timer for this range and strive to respect its expiry.
- Replace the habit: When you feel the urge to take the phone, try to do something else. Take a short walk, prepare a tea, read a book or magazine, solve a crossword puzzle. There are endless alternatives that do not require a screen and that can enrich your day.
Decreasing smartphone usage is not an impossible task. It requires commitment and consistency in working on their own habits. The results, although gradual, are almost always guaranteed. If, despite the application of these strategies, you still find difficulties, there are also several third-party applications designed specifically to help you on this path. Among these, some famous include BlackOut, Focus Keeper, Forest or Plantie, which adopt different approaches to stimulate concentration and limit digital distractions.
Remember, the real change starts with you. The tools are at your disposal, but the will to use them to regain your time and your attention is the most valuable resource.
