The predictability is a key factor: if a platform knows that certain types of problematic content are endemic to its ecosystem, does its responsibility increase? In addition, the international landscape has a fragmentation of standards and expectations. What is acceptable in a culture can be deeply offensive in another, making the definition of “inappropriate content” a mobile target. Parents must inform themselves not only about the games to which their children play, but also about the social platforms they attend, about risks such as cyberbullying grooming online disinformation and the radicalization, which go far beyond the mere exposure to explicit content. Organizations such as ESRB, PEGI (Pan European Game Information) and numerous NGOs offer comprehensive resources and guides to help parents navigate this complex environment. But no filter or tool can replace dialogue. To speak openly with children about what they see and feel online, about how they feel about certain experiences and what they should do if they meet something disturbing, it is fundamental. Encourage children to report inappropriate content and trust parents to ask for help creates a security environment. The co-play – playing with children – it is another powerful tool: it allows parents to directly understand the gaming environment, its social dynamics and the types of content that children encounter. Finally, the goal is not to isolate children from digital, but to teach them to be digital citizens responsible, able to discern, protect your privacy and interact constructively and safely. It is a lesson that evolves continuously, requiring parents to always stay a step forward, or at least step by step, with new trends and technologies.

The economic value of the UGC, therefore, is inherently linked to the ability of platforms to balance creative freedom with a robust governance of content, a delicate balance that defines success and sustainability in the digital age.

Future perspectives: Between Artificial Intelligence, Metaverso and New Ethical dilemmas

And how a content generated by the AI stands out from a created by a human being, especially in the context of deepfake or visual and sound manipulations? Parallelly, the concept of Meta – understood as a set of persistent, interconnected and immersive virtual worlds – places the UGC at the center of its very existence. In Metaverso, users are not only occasional viewers or creators, but active fabric builders of digital reality. Here, the UGC is not limited to maps or skins, but extends to entire social experiences, virtual economies, digital identity through custom avatars and interactions that blur the boundary between game and real life. The decentralization promised by some visions of Metaverso, often based on blockchain and NFT technologies for digital property, presents a unique challenge for moderation. If the contents are distributed on decentralized networks, who is the final manager of their supervision? How do global rules apply in an environment that is by its global and fragmented nature? Theinteroperability, that is the ability to make assets and identities move between different metaverts, further complicates traceability and content management. The future of UGC in Metaverso will require a adaptive regulatory framework, taking into account the dynamic, generative and potentially decentralized nature of content, pushing to new forms of collaboration between platforms, governments and communities to balance unlimited innovation with the ineludible need for security and responsibility.

From the initial concern for the naked skin in Unreal Tournament III in 2007, we reached a point where content generated by users has become an unstoppable force that shapes our digital panorama. The path undertaken by ESRB with its notice on online experience, while being a necessary first step, has demonstrated the limits of an approach that delegates responsibility mainly to the final consumer. Today, it is obvious that user-generated content management requires one collective and multidisciplinary effort. I developers and publishers must invest in robust moderation tools, clear policies and dedicated teams. The platforms must act with greater transparency and responsibility, collaborating with regulatory authorities to establish effective standards. I regulators must develop agile and forward-looking regulatory frameworks that balance user protection with freedom of expression and innovation. Finally parents and users they play a crucial role in digital literacy, conscious use of the tools at their disposal and promoting a culture of online respect and security. Ultimately, the future of user-generated content is a delicate balance between openness to unlimited innovation and safeguarding a digital environment that is challenging, inclusive and, above all, safe for all. It is a continuous commitment that will require constant adaptation, collaboration between all stakeholders and a deep awareness of the ethical and social implications of our digital creations.
