Imagine the scenario: a phone call quoted by a friend who announces the irreversible loss of all his digital photos. A nightmare, a fear that catches you suddenly and pushes you to reflect on the safety of your dearest memories. In an age where most of our lives are immortalized and preserved in digital format, photography protection has become an absolute priority. Fortunately, there are numerous solutions to create security copies of your images, preventing the risk of losing them forever.
The Crucial Importance of Photo Backup
The photographs are not simple files: they are fragments of life, testimonies of significant events, beloved faces and special places. Losing it means deleting a piece of your personal history. For this reason, devoting time to creating a robust and reliable backup system is not an option, but a necessity. Whether it's photos taken with your smartphone, saved on your computer or shared on social media, each image deserves to be protected carefully.
Photo backup on Smartphone and Tablet: Mobile Solutions
Smartphones and tablets are our main tools to capture moments. Let's see how to secure photos on these devices.
For Android Devices
The Android platform offers different options for image backup:
- Google Photos: It is often preinstalled and allows you to automatically sync photos and videos with Google servers, taking advantage of integration with Google Drive. Each Google account offers 15 GB of free space, which can be expanded via a Google One subscription. Activation is simple: just open the app, configure the account and enable backup. You can choose between Original quality or Save storage space (with 16 MP compression for photos and 1080p for videos). In addition, you can select specific folders of the device to be backed up (e.g. WhatsApp images) and decide whether to use mobile data (with caution to avoid excessive consumption).
- Samsung Cloud (for Samsung devices): For Samsung users, this service, now connected to Microsoft OneDrive, offers 5 GB of free space. To activate it, you need access to Settings of the device, select your Samsung account and then browse Samsung Cloud > Gallery. You will be required access with a Microsoft account. The photos will then be stored on OneDrive. Also on Samsung devices you can still use Google Photos.
For iOS devices (iPhone and iPad)
For Apple users, the most integrated solution is:
- iCloud: Apple's cloud service offers 5 GB of free space for photos and other data, expandable with a iCloud+ subscription. The synchronized photos are accessible via the Photo app on all iOS devices, macOS and via iCloud Web. To activate, go to Settings > [Your name] > iCloud > Photos and activate the switch Photos of iCloud.
- Google Photos (alternative for iOS): Also on iPhone and iPad you can install and use Google Photos, following the same directions provided for Android, provided you have a Google account.
Save Memory from Social Networks and Messaging Apps
Shared images on social media and chat are equally valuable and deserve a dedicated backup.
For photos exchanged on WhatsApp, the best strategy is to activate the automatic backup of the app:
- Backup to Google Drive (Android) or iCloud (iOS): Access to Settings of WhatsApp, then to Chat > Backup chat. Here you can start an immediate backup and configure the frequency (quotidian, weekly, monthly). You can include or exclude videos. WhatsApp also offers the option of an end-to-end encrypted backup, but requires the storage of a password that, if lost, makes data unrecoverable.
- Inclusion in system backups: WhatsApp photos can also be included in the automatic backups of Google Photos or iCloud, enabling backup of specific folders (e.g. WhatsApp Images) in the settings of these services.
The well-known social network allows you to download a complete archive of your information, including photos:
- “Download your information” function: From the Facebook app, go up Menu > Settings and privacy > Settings. Section Your information, select Download your information and then Request a download. Choose your account, select the types of information (unfortunately there is no specific option only for photos, but you can select Post and Stories, which contain them), customize format, quality and date range, then send the request. The operation may take hours or days. Once you are ready, you will receive an email notification and you will be able to download the archive, which by default will end in the Download folder of your device.
Similar to Facebook, Instagram also offers a data download tool:
- “Download your information” function: Access your profile from the app, tap the ’ button on the top right, then Your business and swipe up to Download your information. Request a download and follow a procedure similar to that of Facebook, selecting the voice Content to include your photos.
Backup Photos on Computer: PC and Mac
Even the computer, either Windows or macOS, plays a key role in the backup strategy.
On Windows
To transfer photos from smartphones and tablets to a Windows PC:
- Using File Explorer (USB Connection): Connect the device to the computer with a USB cable. On Android, make sure the USB debug is disabled (usually the default) and enable the mode File Transfers from the notification area. On iOS, it is essential that iTunes is installed for the necessary drivers. Once recognized, open the File Explorer, click on the device icon and copy folders as DCIM (which contains the gallery) or other app folders (e.g. WhatsApp Images) in a secure location on your PC. You can also use the function Import images and videos right-click the device icon.
- Other options: Microsoft Photo app or wireless transfer methods can be used as alternatives.
On Mac
For Mac computers, the process is just as intuitive:
- By Acquisition Image (USB connection): Connect your smartphone or tablet to your Mac. On Android, enable Photo transfer (PTP) from the notification area. Open the app Image acquisition (present in the folder Other of the Launchpad). Once you upload photos, you can drag them directly to a Mac folder or select them, choose the destination from the menu Import in and click on Import.
- Other options: Software such as Android File Transfer or wireless solutions like AirDroid facilitate photo transfer from Android and iOS to Mac.
Cloud Synchronization from PC
For photos already on your computer, cloud services offer automatic synchronization:
- Google Drive for PC: The Google Drive desktop application for Windows and macOS allows you to automatically sync specific computer folders with Google Drive and Google Photos, taking advantage of free or paid space. After installation, files can be managed directly from the Google Drive folder in your File Explorer or Finder.
- iCloud for Windows/macOS: ICloud also offers an official Windows client and native macOS integration. On Windows, after installation and access with your Apple ID, you can activate synchronization of ICloud Photo Library and select which photos to upload or download. On Mac, it's even easier: go to System Settings > [Your name] > iCloud and activate synchronization of Photos.
Explore Other Cloud Services for Backup
In addition to the most popular solutions, there are other good cloud storage services that you can consider for your photos:
- Dropbox: It offers 2 GB of free space, expandable with paid plans. It has clients for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, with automatic sync functionality.
- OneDrive: The Microsoft service, integrated in Windows 11 and 10, offers 5 GB free storage, expandable with a Microsoft 365 subscription. Available with official clients for different platforms.
- kDrive: An Infomaniak cloud service that offers 15 GB of free space, which can be increased by subscription. It can be used via smartphone and tablet app or web browser on PC.
Final Tips for Effective Backup
To ensure maximum safety of your digital memories, it is advisable to adopt a multi-tier backup strategy. A good starting point is the 3-2-1 rule: maintain at least three copies of your data, at least two different types of media (e.g. internal hard disk and external hard disk) and with at least an offsite copy (as a cloud service). Automate backup processes, where possible, and periodically verify the integrity of copies are fundamental steps to sleep peaceful sleeps. Do not let the protection of your most beautiful moments!
